Sun Bandit Turns 3, Earns Global Media Attention As Solar Innovator

What is Sun Bandit?“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”
–Socrates, (470 – 399 BC)

This year, Sun Bandit celebrated its birthday in style, being featured as one of several “Innovators Driving Energy Independence” on the cover of
Renewable Energy World July 4. Since then, coverage of Sun Bandit firsts have appeared in over 191 online news outlets, from The ECOReport and Clean Technica to Fox Broadcasting and the LA Daily News.

With an impressive trajectory of industry firsts under its belt, solar hybrid water heating solution Sun Bandit® is celebrating its third anniversary. And from the United States to Canada, the Bahamas, South America and beyond, its revolutionary, utility-independent approach to solar water heating is turning heads – and generating more than a few headlines.

The seeds for Sun Bandit were sown on July 4, 2013, when the team at Next Generation Energy (NGE) launched an all-hands-on-deck effort to identify and clear many of the hurdles inhibiting widespread solar water heating adoption.

In response, a PV-powered solar water heating solution was forged that eliminates fluids, leaks, pump stations, overheating, stagnation, freezing and the complicated installation and
maintenance issues that can plague traditional mechanical solar water heating solutions. It presents a paradigm shift in the way solar energy is captured, stored and used to heat water.

With a whopping 8 million water heaters sold in the US each year, Sun Bandit is poised to provide new, sure-fire revenue opportunities for those in the solar, electrical, plumbing and homebuilding industries eager to sate the demand, which cuts across all socio-economic strata.

Solar has a solid sustainability factor. But is solar water heating a viable economic play?

“Incorporating a PV energy source into solar water heating overcomes a heap of problems that have plagued the solar water heating industry for decades,” said Eric Carlson, Chief Innovation Officer of
RevoluSun, one of the nation’s top purveyors of advanced sustainable home technology.

“No one wants to leave money on the table. Sun Bandit’s PV-powered solution eliminates many of the problems that inhibited our customers from adopting solar water heating solutions, freeing them to realize the energy savings solar can provide,” Carlson continued. “It’s a powerful antidote to perennial industry challenges involving price, performance, permitting and inconsistently-issued net metering perks across the US.”

Phase Two of Sun Bandit’s go-to-market strategy involved achieving the requisite certifications to deliver proof-of-concept credentials to dissuade doubting Thomases while reinforcing Sun Bandit’s revenue potential among a range of prospective distributors.

Aversion to the unfamiliar is universal. Sun Bandit’s new, simplified solar water heating technology requires no formal NABCEP
thermal training to install – and no utility connection to operate. Sun Bandit works independent of the grid, but can seamlessly integrate with grid-tied systems. And it’s inspiring a variety of interests: builders seeking to enhance their green inventory and attract sustainably-inclined tenants, consumers eager to slash energy costs, qualify for incentives and live more sustainably and governmental agencies committed to cutting costs while achieving important policy objectives in emissions reduction and sustainability.

With the support of fellow solar industry professionals, builders, policymakers and sustainability innovators, NGE’s Sun Bandit team has not only driven ICC-SRCC OG-100 certification, OG-300 certification, UL ratings in both the US and Canada and Energy Star listing, they’ve succeeded in
creating a solution that’s warranted an entirely new category of solar hybrid water heating and energy storage.

Word of Sun Bandit’s capabilities in heating water is spreading like…well…wildfire! It’s been integrated into home energy upgrade menus across the continent, from North Carolina-based Deltec’s modular homes to the line-up at RevoluSun’s Honolulu-based Smart Home Innovation Center.
It’s been installed in residential homes from Canada to Costa Rica, development projects from LA to St. Croix and on government facilities in the Southeast United States.

In fact, this newly-pedigreed system’s ability to deliver on- and off-grid efficiencies
is allowing it to gain traction in states with and without incentive programs and earning Sun Bandit a perfect 10 on the Tennessee Valley Authority’s EnergyRight eScore program.

Socrates was right. The secret to meaningful change isn’t fighting the old, it’s
building the new. At a time when the future of net metering is far from certain — and far too reliant on which way the political winds are bloviating — this headliner known as Sun Bandit is ready for prime time. How will you use it?
